Murderbirds Radio

17 August 2009 | Hg | Crooked | 15 Comments so far »

If you’ve got access to Spotify, we’ve got a couple of things for you to check out.  Firstly, a Murderbirds Radio playlist with five songs chosen by each band member.  Secondly, a Murderbirds Fans Radio playlist that you can add tracks to yourself.

At the moment, Murderbirds Radio is a one-off.  Lupen, Bob, Tom & Craig have chosen some songs that they’ve loved over the years.  Not necessarily their definitive five favourite tracks of all time, but nevertheless stuff that they’d like you to hear.

Murderbirds Fans Radio is your chance to respond.  It’s a collaborative Spotify playlist to which you can add tracks, change the playing order, and so on.  You can highlight songs that you’d like to play to the band, or that you think other fans might like.

You can’t see who added what to a Spotify playlist, but you can use the comments on this post to chat about the band’s choices or your own additions to the Fans playlist.  If you can’t use Spotify for any reason, you can still join in with the discussion.

A short disclaimer: the band has no affiliation to Spotify (there aren’t even any band tracks on there… yet).  This is just an experiment – a bit of fun.  Yes, there are adverts and yes, they’re annoying, but that’s how Spotify pays royalties to fellow musicians.

So… get listening, get thinking, get adding your own tracks and get commenting!

The band’s choices:

  • Bob Marley & The Wailers – I Shot The Sheriff
  • Led Zeppelin – Gallows Pole
  • Roxy Music – Love Is The Drug
  • Tom Waits – Gun Street Girl
  • The Clash – I Fought The Law
  • The Who – My Generation
  • Radiohead – Paranoid Android
  • Wilco – Poor Places
  • The Strokes – Take It Or Leave It
  • Holy Fuck – Lovely Allen
  • Supertramp – School
  • The Mountain Goats – No Children
  • Wire – I Am The Fly
  • Edwyn Collins – A Girl Like You
  • Eminem – Lose Yourself
  • Tom Waits – 16 Shells From A Thirty-Ought-Six
  • Bert Jansch – Poison
  • Radiohead – There There
  • Jimi Hendrix Experience – Little Wing
  • The Band – Ophelia

… but who chose what?

A couple of things to add to the above:

1 – I’ll give you a clue about the band’s choices. They’re presented on the playlist in batches of five, one for each band member. In other words, tracks 1-5 were chosen by the same person, then 6-10, 11-15 and 16-20. Does that make it any easier to work out who chose which tracks?

2 – I’ve added a few tracks to the Fans playlist to get it started. The choices aren’t entirely random, they’re things that have come up in conversation with one or more of the band members over the past few months. I can waffle endlessly about music and could probably write a mini-essay on each of these songs, but I’ll restrain myself. Enjoy…

Adam & The Ants – Kings Of The Wild Frontier
    Pixies – The Holiday Song
    Titus Andronicus – Titus Andronicus
Tom Waits – Step Right Up
Johnny Cash – The Beast In Me
Dead Kennedys – Holiday In Cambodia
    Aphex Twin – Children Talking
Mountain Goats – Woke Up New
    Portishead – Magic Doors
    The Aliens – Rox

Jonathan – second attempt is still one out of four.

dAn – one out of four the first time and two out of four the second time.

No one going to add anything to the Fans playlist?

Does spotify have any early disney?

  10. Hg on 19 August 2009 at 11:46 says:

Yeah, there’s a compilation album called Pure Disney that has a lot of the old stuff on it.

I’ll add Vladimir Horowitz doing Chopin’s Nocture Op27, no1 in C sharp. It’s fucking amazing and musically contains every percievable human emotion.

    Also like to add

    James -God Only Knows.
    The Doors -Unknown Soldier.
    David Bowie -Magic Dance.
    The Doors -Wishful,Sinful.
    The La’s -Freedom Song.

Dan – I’m assuming you want these added on your behalf, as I haven’t seen them appear on the playlist, so here are the results of my detective work…

Chopin – do you mean Op 72 by any chance? That’s the only vaguely similar Horowitz one I can find. It’s in E minor though. There’s also Op 15 and Op 9. Otherwise, it’s not there.

James – this track isn’t there, unfortunately. Spotify has the singles collection, the Strip Mine album and Hey Ma album.

    Doors, Bowie, La’s – added.

Nice one Hg and good shout for Holiday In Cambodia- I prefer the album version where Jello repeats Pol Pot frantically. (Used to skate to Fresh Fruit… repeatedly as a kid.) Signed up to Spotify and found Chopin’s Nocturne Op27 No1 in C sharp minor, but it was only by Elizabeth Leonskja or something and was under Op277- not as good as Horowitz’ version.
    Peace out Bruvva.

Lest we forget, the band’s Murderbirds Radio choices were as follows:

    Bob (1-5)
    Craig (6-10)
    Lupen (11-15)
    Tom (16-20)

Murderbirds Fans Radio is currently up to 33 tracks… keep ‘em coming.
