Free MP3 download: Great Fears & Curious Predictions

Lupen Crook & The Murderbirds are pleased to offer their extended Crooked Family of fans a free download-only EP, Great Fears & Curious Predictions, containing five previously unreleased acoustic tracks.

The EP was recorded in mid-2008 and represents the sound of the band during a period of transition.  The music is pared down to its bare essentials and the lyrics are more direct and less cryptic than in previous work.

“I am trying for simplicity,” explained Mr Crook in an interview around the same time.  The results of this recording session were the starting point for the work that commenced on the band’s next album several months later.

Notably different in tone to the newer material released on The Lost Belongings EP in July of this year, they nevertheless offer a further indication of where the band is heading with its next major release.

Great Fears & Curious Predictions takes its place in the formal canon of the band’s discography.  It’s download-only because it’s free, but artwork is included to allow fans to make their own CD copies if required.

The EP has its own mini-site, to distinguish it from the individual MP3 downloads that have appeared here in the past (and will continue to appear in future).  Please pass on the link to your friends, spread the word.  Enjoy.

Fantastic … is there any way to donate a “tip” to thank you for this EP ?

  5. Hg on 9 September 2009 at 11:29 says:

Sarabian – we’ll get back to you.

While I’m here, a quick techie note to anyone printing out the DIY artwork. As the lateness of my bedtime last night and the bags under my eyes this morning will testify, it was painstakingly sized to fit the standard sized CD jewel cases, slim cases and plastic wallets.

However, when I did a test print with Adobe Acrobat, it came out around 5% smaller. If this happens to you, check the settings in the print dialog box and make sure Acrobat isn’t trying to “scale” or “fit to page” or any of that nonsense.

As for the CD label… not sure whether these things are a standard format or whether it varies depending on where you buy them. This design is based on the 2-to-a-page A4 label sheets available from Staples.

Thanks again lads! Been listening to pretty much repeatedly all afternoon.

If I HAD to find fault- you know, HAD to….My only complaint would be I’m pretty sure it was like 9.10 or 9.11 before it was available. :P

  8. Nick Roseblade on 9 September 2009 at 21:35 says:

I’ve just got it. I couldn’t download it at work (bastards), but it was worth the wait!

Equal to an England 5-1 home victory!

Thanks for making it free, but I am gutted not to be seeing you play live though.

dAn – Mea culpa. It was supposed to be 09:09 but life got in the way.

thats what he sID. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT LIFE N LOVE N LUST N FUCKINF DOWNLOADS/ HOW I WISH THIS COULD B SOME A SENTIMENTAL OFFERING HOWEVER, I AM PSYCHOSTIC . ..

[Hg regains control of the keyboard]

Under the circumstances, say no more. It’s out there. Enjoy (again). With much love (& alcohol) from the Blind Beggar. Say a prayer for us getting home. Wherever home may be.

  10. Lupen Crook on 10 September 2009 at 5:26 says:

So that prayer didn’t work. Two bus shelters later and it seems resting the head in a random 24 hour internet cafe is the only option I have. Surrounded by the lost and unloved, three heads already crashed out, mine to follow, seems this is where Londons underground actually hang out. Despite bright lipsticks, skinny jeans, the unfortunate failure of punk rock and a senseless post grunge parade of expense and fashionable alienation, its not brick lane or camden town after all, is right here with those lost and unloved. Sleeping on the job! Anyway, I’m crazy now, very tired, gonna get my head down, fold into this seat and rely on my dreams, avoid the reality of these travellers turned sick, myself, homeless bound, distant impressions of beds turned cold. x so nighty night.

Beautiful, thank u for this. Will send this on to the world.
Crook, hope you got home alright in the end.

Woke up about an hour ago. Those same three sleepy hippies are crashed out in front of the computers. For me the sun is shining. I’ve spent the last hour stood on the crossroad of Tottenham Court Road and its like lazing on a beach. Good energy as I watch the world prepare for another day. x

this is a ruddy great ep. I’m gonna review it for my fanzine Clipper Guts (i don’t have a star rating but it would be five out of five)

hello Mr Crook and family. Thank you very much for the little EP. It’s fucking top, beano, beezer and whizz. It’s proper quality assured plant and even comes with it’s own safety equipment. Kick me in the face if it ain’t so.

  25. Hg on 18 September 2009 at 13:10 says:

Katie – thought you might be interested to know that about a quarter of the people arriving at the mini-site are doing so because of your blog post. Great stuff, thanks.

Tiff – for some reason I’m not seeing any referral traffic at all from your post. Don’t believe it’s not happening, so maybe a technical stats issue to do with LJ or those Snap previews.

Joe9t – make sure you let us know when it’s out.

Anyone/everyone else – anything you can do to help spread the word about this EP is appreciated. For the Lost Belongings EP there was a promotions budget, admittedly very modest. For this one there’s absolutely nothing and all we have is word of mouth. Stick it on your Facebook pages, write about it on your blogs, mention it on Twitter, MySpace and so on. We’ll do a post sometime over the next week or so that collects together the most interesting reviews that we see.

  26. Hg on 19 September 2009 at 11:18 says:

Hi to everyone visiting the site from the NME news article about the EP release. Hopefully you’ve downloaded the EP and like what you hear.

There’s plenty more material on this site that showcases the band’s multi-media creativity. Either follow it backwards from the current posts, or choose Browse from the menu bar and work out what kind of stuff you want to see.

Also, for the handful of people who wanted to offer the band a donation towards the cost of the EP, there’s now a “tip jar” option at the bottom of the Shop page and towards the bottom of the right-hand sidebar on all the other pages.

The EP is totally free and there’s no obligation to pay for it. However, any contribution that you’d like to offer is gratefully received. The band’s money is well-guarded – from the band members themselves, mainly :-) – and gets spent on specific projects like studio sessions, art materials, and so on.

  27. Tiffany on 20 September 2009 at 16:46 says:

I’ve linked to this page, not the download.

  28. Hg on 20 September 2009 at 19:37 says:

Tiff – yeah, don’t see any traffic coming in here either. Happens sometimes. I’m fairly confident it’s a stats issue rather than the fact that people aren’t clicking, I’m (not) seeing it elsewhere too.

  29. joe9t on 20 September 2009 at 21:19 says:

    will post copy hg
