Filthy Lucre

Hicks in peril

A few words on merchandise and filthy lucre.  A couple of people asked us if there was a way to donate to the band to show their appreciation for the recent free EP.  We’ve added a “tip jar” button in the sidebar on the right (and also on the Shop page).

The EP is free and that’s that.  The only strings attached are to the guitars.  However, to continue the theme, the band runs on a shoestring.  Merchandise profits are modest and any money gets reinvested into creative projects and practical necessities.

The next most pressing task is to rescue Hicks, the band’s van, currently parked in a perilous location and in daily danger of being towed away and crushed.  Though the immediate plans to tour have unfortunately changed, we need to think to the future.

So, any donations are gratefully received.  We reckon it’ll cost about sixty quid to get Hicks to a place of safety.  Not to sound like a fucking supermarket advert, but every little helps.  Alternatively, you might like to buy some of the band’s fine merchandise.

Stocks of the limited edition Lost Belongings EP with the canvas sleeves are running very low. At the time of writing there are seven left and when they’re gone, they’re gone.  There are plenty of standard edition copies left (paper sleeve only) if you miss out.

The hand-made t-shirts are sold out.  There are some old-style Kill Cats ones left. They’re a little grubby, but it’s genuine Unawarehouse filth and thus part of the band’s heritage.  We thought about washing & ironing them, but that’s not very rock ‘n’ roll.

We still have a few Lost Belongings “paint fetish” posters and some silver puzzle piece charms.  Plenty of copies of the Old Books compilation.  We have plans for new merchandise to be available soon… we’ll let you know the moment there’s any news.

i think we’ve managed to send you some pennies – not much as we have a little baby due to appear in a couple of months…

Silvia & Paul… thank you, very generous. Glad you’re enjoying the EP. Hope everything goes well with the little one. Say hi at Hoxton if you can make it.

Cheers Joe. All packaged up and ready to be posted tomorrow morning. Anything that converts the suitcase of merch into hard cash to rescue Hicks is very helpful.

if my zine clipper guts made any money i’d donate that. tell you what I’m releasing a complation cd soon and i can give you the profits from that. it won’t be much but it may be enough to get some new guitar strings and labels from staples!

Joe, that’s a very kind offer. We’d hate to steal the profits of all your hard work, but if it puts you in a better position to make a donation that would be wonderful. Let us know more about the compilation.

Also while I’m here, thanks to everyone who ordered merchandise this weekend, whether as a direct result of this blog post or just a coincidence. Also, thanks to everyone who donated without leaving a comment here. We assume you want to remain anonymous, but want to publicly state our thanks.

I hope everyone gets where we’re coming from with this post. The music industry’s a glorious fucking mess at the moment. Bands have to be creative in the way that they fund their output. We’re just feeling our way, trying to find out what works and what doesn’t.

These are all possibilities, aimed at discovering how a band like this can sustain itself. We hate the hard sell. We’re just trying to say: this is what we can give you, this is what you can give us in return, does it work for you? If so… cool. If not… what instead?

    Thoughts are very welcome.

My “witty” use of words may have had better impact if I’d spell-checked before submitting! I apologise…I meant Hydra. Come to think of it, not even sure if I spelled generosity correctly!

    Aw fuck it! :(

Here in the land of the monthly paycheque, the mighty salary has fallen from above for October and I have the required stuff to give a little to the band –

This transaction will appear on your statement as “MURDERBIRDS”. If the banks weren’t automated drones, that would get them thinking.

Liza – your comment came in last night as Mr Crook & I sat in the pub with a laptop in front of us. He’s definitely up for it and is having a think about the logistics. Probably hand delivery to people based in London/Medway is the most realistic option.

Sarabian – thanks, much appreciated. Also for the order.

That’s a great idea there Liza!

I’d put fews and twos up front for one!
