Curse Of The Mirror Wicked EP

Free MP3 download: Curse Of The Mirror Wicked

Lupen Crook & The Murderbirds are proud to unveil their latest release, Curse Of The Mirror Wicked.  This EP is released in support of YoungMinds.  There’s more information on the mini-site explaining why.  If you enjoy the music, please consider making a donation to the charity.

Here’s one of the songs from the EP, performed last night at The Flowerpot in Kentish Town.  A slightly more acoustic set than normal, with Bob away and Tom filling in on percussion duty.  Check out that high-tech, rice-filled salt shaker and borrowed tambourine… no expense spared!

Download the EP here… let us know what you think x

Cheers. Playing it now. I think I like it! I think I do! Fuckin’ great!

I don’t pretend to known anything much about vocals but Mosh’s voice is sounding much richer and dynamic.

Alex – dead right. Good fucking job too, the amount of band cash we had to spend on that voicebox transplant.

Daisy – whether it ever happens or not is another matter, but I hear whispers that this song might be reworked quite radically in future. Time will tell…

Joe – yeah, Tom’s guitar work is a joy. The cotton-pickin’ chorus of Devil’s Son is probably my favourite musical moment of the year.

Wow! Internet has been down all day so I have been in a pissy mood as I couldn’t download the EP. Finally got it and it is as wonderful as I expected. Dead Girls & Daggers is ace! Love the harmonica!

Can’t wait to be back in Kent and hear some of these tracks live.

I will be making a donation as soon as I have boosted my overdraft and fed my thinning belly.

    AMAZING STUFF!!!!

My personal highlight is the guitar on Of Lovers And Lost Children (especially right after “…Far off lands,a far out dream…”-BEAUTIFUL!) but the whole song is incredible.

…as are the 5 other gems!

Like Dan below, I am also skint, rookit and broke. Will donate once payday comes. Cheers guys. This EP is a fuckin corker!

Nice one everyone. Means a lot to us all. And that bit of butterfly guitar picking is my personal highlight of this EP as well. Toms a sick sick man. To all who’ve downloaded and those of you who are hopefully going to do so in the future, I dearly hope all sits well in hell, and that these songs make the good light of day shine a little brighter for all of you. xxx

    …CONGRATULATIONS!…

I believe this is your 6 month anniversary for the website (more or less, or even exactly) and it’s growing in style and interest daily! Also you’re 3 EPs in already!! Nice! From all the class interviews appearing of late it got me thinking..

why not put up a post like a Q and A where we can all ask about the music, art, likes, dislikes…etc.
You know, like you get in womens magazines but hopefully worth reading! :)

    Whatcha fink?

  11. Hg on 18 November 2009 at 21:02 says:

Hey, thanks dAn… I kind of knew at the back of my mind that it was coming up, but we’ve been so wrapped up in getting the new EP out that it passed by without us noticing. Officially the site went live on 13 May, so we’re just over the six-month mark now.

You’re dead on about the Q&A thing, great idea. It’s all been very “broadcast” round here recently – us telling you what’s going on. I keep thinking that we could be doing more of the truly interactive stuff that we did over the summer, like the People Versus The Crooked Family songwriting project (not forgotten, honestly… it recurs frequently in our conversations and it WILL be done), the Spotify collaborative playlist, and so on.

The Q&A idea is great. We’ll have a chat about the best time to do it. Apart from the EP, there is much going on in the background at the moment related to finishing off the final 1% of the album (track order, mastering, and so on) and working out release and tour strategy for next year. Might be something we could squeeze in before Christmas, or might be better to do it as one of the first things on the site next year.

If anyone else has any comments on the website, things you’d like to see appearing, stuff you like (or even don’t like), we’re always interested. We have a To Do list as long as your arm and so many ideas that we’ve just not had time to implement; it’s always good to hear other people’s perspectives on what it might be interesting or important to do.

  12. Lupen Crook on 18 November 2009 at 21:59 says:

. . . in the meanwhile, if there’s anything that anyone wants to know, that you feel requires our immediate attention, feel free to ask away via the comments pages on the site. The more interaction the better. For me, better together with strange f(r)iends during these cruel and glorious winter months than watching the walls on your own. x

i may as well ask as the time as arises (and i forgot to do so in clipper guts!). . .

what were “the fisher price recordings” and will they every see the cold light of a england day? i.e. crawl out at some point

i’m aware this might be a bit old but they sound really cool!

  14. Lupen Crook on 19 November 2009 at 16:09 says:

I have many cassettes full of recordings. Just after Bonzai Reservoir split I spent weeks on end wandering around the Medway Towns with a portable Fisher Price Recorder. I began making records of almost everything. The blueprint to ‘Accidents Occur Whilst Sleeping’ was unknowingly being written, so that period of time and that little machine has a lot to answer for. I guess the ‘official’ Fisher Price recordings would be the 3 tracks that got me signed. I believe that includes the original versions of Lucky 6 and Matilda V. Not sure what the third track was, or where any of that material is now. Such a long time ago. Innocent times.

  15. Hg on 19 November 2009 at 17:33 says:

Are they the versions on the initial TnT demo CD (bottom of Releases page)?

(Fisher-Price is a kids’ toy manufacturer, in case anyone’s not heard of them.)

  16. Lupen Crook on 19 November 2009 at 18:39 says:

No. The TNT versions were recorded during a live session in France before I started work on the first album ‘Accidents…’.

The Fisher Price demos date way before all of that, and strangely enough, if I remember correctly, I scrawled ‘Accidents Occur Whilst Sleeping’ on the handmade cover of that first demo, that same one that ended up in the hands of Dean Fragile (TNT).

    My (1st) question is a sTrAnGe one…

    Why, when I listen to Staghead & Monster, do I always think of the film Falling Down starring Michael Douglas? :}

  18. joe9t on 19 November 2009 at 22:55 says:

there is a lot to be said for wandering around kent recording things. i’ve spent quite a few nights in the fair city of canterbury randoming switching on a old dictaphone i had in my coat pocket. the more pissed i got the odder things i started to record. in the morning i would listen back to hours of me getting drinks at the bar, talking to strangers, getting on bus and going to cash points.
i meet dean a couple of times thru a mate of mines band called onlookers who he was sorta managing a while ago. after they point out mr. crook in some nme article i got accidents and was hooked.
    sorry for the rambling

This is my favourite EP yet – it is hard to pick a favourite song from it actually – I clearly need to listen to it some more (although last.fm claims I’ve listened to it 10 times already)

Glad to contribute to your charity

Would the various EPs me available as a torrent, so others can help out with the server download costs ?

  21. Hg on 25 November 2009 at 9:16 says:

Sarabian – glad you’re enjoying it, thanks for the donation.

Good suggestion about making them available as torrents, but we’ve chosen not to do that for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the web hosting account that we use has more than enough capacity, so it’s not costing us any extra. Secondly, if we centralise the downloads then we can track numbers, which is very important for the band at this point in time. With a decentralised torrent we’d have no idea how many people are downloading and where they were coming from (i.e. referring link).

I don’t mean to go on but is there still plans to start selling Crooked prints on the website in the future? I’m keen to fill space on my walls. Only have Galatea Of The Spheres and photos of my kids.

    Cheers!

    P.S (A QUESTion…)
What is everyones favourite LCATMB song- old or new- and what makes it your favourite?

  23. Hg on 4 December 2009 at 11:56 says:

dAn – main priority at the moment is to get the album finished, then we’ll be working on merch plans for next year. Definitely something we want to see happen.

Some day your prints will come :-)

I’m going to sidestep the “favourite” question for now, as I wouldn’t even know where to start.
