Karma Before The Storm
Thanks to everyone who came and showed their support at the Bull and Gate on Monday. We appreciate that it was a shorter set than you might have expected. Bob wasn’t well enough to play, so Mr Crook and Tom planned a duo set. Last-second technical problems on stage forced it to become a solo performance, meaning that several songs had to be sacrificed. Hopefully you enjoyed what you heard, including two brand new numbers. Titles are still in flux, but you’ll be hearing them again.
The song in the video above is Coldalone, which has been around for a couple of years but has yet to be recorded. Speaking of recordings, the World’s End / Devil’s Son single is out on Monday! We’re putting the finishing touches to the Devil’s Son video right now. We’re a little behind on getting the single available in the website shop. News to follow imminently. Be aware that the 7″ colour lyric insert will only be available in copies bought direct from us. If you buy elsewhere, it’s just a black sleeve plus the vinyl.
We’re looking forward to Lounge On The Farm this weekend. Many of Medway’s finest will be there: Slap Alice, Archie Wah Wahs, The Singing Loins, Stuart Turner and The Lovedays, to name but a few. The band is on around 4pm on Sunday. We’re also getting very excited about Latitude the following weekend. Too many brilliant musicians to even begin to put together a list of recommendations; if you’re going to be there too, leave us a comment and let us know who you think we should check out.

It was good on Monday. Shame that it wasn’t a full band set though.
I can’t wait for that 7″.
Will there be CD-r\MP3 of the 7″ as well?
Hi Nick, glad you enjoyed it. Believe me, no one was more upset than the band themselves. It was a great venue with an appreciative crowd. Bob was already suffering at Wireless on Saturday and simply not well enough to be there.
There’s no “official” CD of the new single. However, we will be selling a limited number of 7″s bundled with promo CD copies, via the website. A download version will be available via Label Fandango. There will be a blog post about this as soon as I’ve got all the back-end stuff organised.
The gig was brilliant.
I can’t wait for the 7″.
I hope Lounge On The Farm and Latitude go well. I’m not gonna be there but here are some bands that are worth checking out at Latitude: Grizzly Bear, Laura Marling, Belle And Sebastian, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, The XX and Mumford And Sons. Florence & The Machine are always good live, as are The Maccabees if you like that kind of music. Although it depends whether you’re going for the whole weekend or just Saturday.
x
Hey Daisy, good to see you on Mon. For various reasons, we’re probably gonna have to regard Lounge as “work” rather than “play” so it’ll be a quick in and out on Sunday. As for Latitude, some of us will be there for the whole thing and others just for the day. Personally I’m looking forward to Laura Marling, Kristin Hersh (a long-term favourite – whose latest album is called “Crooked”, of all things!), Crystal Castles and These New Puritans. A friend works with Rodrigo Y Gabriela, so I’ll be taking a look. Nadine Shah is the sister of another friend. I interviewed Esben & the Witch last year, so it’s about time I saw them play. Will also be checking out some of the non-music stuff too, hopefully including Blake Morrison, Kristin Hersh and China Miéville.
Mr Crook’s thoughts on Latitude are online here (scroll down to bottom).
Apart from Mr. Crook and the Crookeds at Latitude, I want to see the brilliant, brilliant Jon McGregor at the Literary Arena; and Anthony Cartwright for Brummie poetic prose and football.
Tom Williams and the Boat, six-piece folkies and the best music to come from Royal Tunbridge Wells since Nick Lowe..Kent rocks!!
And Hair on a floating stage in the middle of a lake.
I don’t know if it’s my terrible memory but ALL the songs on Monday (bar the last one of course) sounded new to me! Very jealous of everyone going to Latitude – it’s an obvious one but Laura Marling is fast turning into a national treasure. And she’s still a baby. Had me welling up a little at the Hop Farm. Enjoy all those who go x
Chris – thanks, I’m intrigued by any kind of “best thing since Nick Lowe” recommendation.
Samantha – depends on what you mean by “new” I suppose! Junk ‘n’ Jubilee and Sunshine Devils were the only two that have been previously released.
The Heretic and Big Top Disaster Scenario haven’t been recorded yet, but have featured in live gig footage that I’ve put up on the site previously. Also, there was an acoustic demo of The Heretic up on the player for a while last year.
Coldalone hasn’t been on the website before, but was played regularly at gigs during 2008.
The other two are about as new as it gets. First time they’ve been played live.
I can’t buy the single from the shop on Monday cos I don’t have PayPal, is it possible for you to save me a vinyl with the coloured lyric insert for when I next see you please?
Daisy – no prob, did you want just the 7″ or the bundle with the CD?
Just so you know (and anyone else, for that matter), you can pay by credit/debit card without having a PayPal account. When you go to checkout, you either login to a PayPal account on the right of the page or pay with card on the left.
With the CD would be great thanks.
Enjoy LOTF!
