Devil’s Son – The Video
We set ourselves rather an ambitious target by commencing work on the Devil’s Son video a fortnight before the release date, mainly due to availability of personnel and resources. Having said that, deadlines are always good for sharpening the mind.
The two songs on this double A side single highlight very different aspects of the band’s output. We therefore needed to ensure that this video worked both with and against Dave Wise’s reflective video for World’s End, which went public a few weeks ago.
We adopted an almost entirely opposing approach this time around. Little planning. No storyboard. Inspiration, but no “concept”. Spur-of-the-moment opportunities, stolen with a magpie eye and polished during the final editing phase. Creative chaos.
For the World’s End video we chose a location, made a trip of it and shivered on the shoreline in the watery Spring sunshine. For Devil’s Son we used the band’s rehearsal space in Chatham, sweating in the claustrophobic heat and dim lighting of the venue.
We had a great time. Dave joined us, filming half of the footage as well as lending the benefit of his experience. Everyone contributed ideas and I edited the footage, with Mr Crook providing guidance and feedback during the penultimate session.
Here are the results. To watch in HD, press Play, change the video quality setting from 360p to 720p and then watch full-screen (click the four outward-pointing arrows next to “720p”). If it “stutters”, you might need to drop back to 360p.
We hope you like it. x

x
i think i’ve just bought it. I think i bought the right one. I don’t know anything anymore x
Nice one Silvia. Sure the right one will pop through the door in a few days time. x
I also emailed you about those paintings a while ago and still waiting for a reply ;-p
Ah . . . yes I remember, haven’t forget, just been distracted by house moving – general family madness, meaning finer details find themselves floating. The paintings are actually in the hands of another at the moment, though I will track them down asap. When I manage to, I’ll give you a call. x
Please do! Just had a dream about you. You were playing some venue that 2 rooms. In the other room shed 7 were playing and u couldn’t choose who to watch. Then u saw rick witter was singing lying down under a blanket so I decided to watch tour gig. Tough choice! X
That should read *your* gig.
Oooh Shed 7, haven’t heard that name in a while. Can’t begin to explain the dreams I’ve been plagued with over the last few weeks – except every building, house, farm, shop, precinct, port and person I’ve ever had the pleasure or pain of meeting within dream has been achingly present. Brutal insomnia has gotten its grip over me, 2 weeks now, barely a wink, and each wink is a traffic of dream scenes I’ve experienced on numerous occasions. I pray for the tornado of change to tear it all down.
I has really bad insomnia after Lizzie was born. I was laying awake for hours desperate to sleep but my brain would just never switch off. I had 1 or 2 hrs of broken sleep a day for 3 months and eventually I think I got over it out of sheer exhaustion. I was really worried at first but my gp told me not to think about it and not to try hard to sleep cz it just makes it worse. Insomnia isn’t nice when it goes on for ages and you never get to catch up. Hope you aren’t too bothered by it cz I sure was and I didn’t like it xxx
hey Lupen & co., i just purchased a devil’s son 7″ single (one with the promo cd for the “hell of it” too
) am looking forward to it(and the lyrics insert)
sorry to hear about the sleepless nights :O hope you guys get some sleep soooooooooon!
PEACE&STRUMS x
SLeepless nights are welcome, just the reality that plagues the waking hours that bothers me at the moment. Blah blah blah – and because you never watch the sunrise . . . is a good lyric.
yeah i wouldn’t mind the sleepless nights if i didn’t have to face life out of bed.x
ps – i’ve just reread my post about the shed 7 dream and realised it makes no sense at all. ‘U’s instead of ‘I’s to be blamed. Let’s just forget about it… do forgive me.
ruddy good video chaps. like tom’s new telecaster. my departed tele was a good workhorse. i got a strat the other week which is good for “lest we connecty” sounds. nice and trebley. if only i could figure out matthew’s magpie!
anywho how did you find the good people of cunterbury at lounge on the weekend?
x
Thanks Joe. Cunterbury was deliciously hot, tho the heat took its toll on some of us. We were only there for a few hours and when not performing artist-type duties we pretty much, erm, lounged. With a 4pm stage time, that was basically the audience’s approach too, but the applause was enthusiastic.
cool cool. shame you guys were on at the same time as the singing loins. i would of seen you guys but the singing loins are brilliant. anyone who records their records in billy childish’s bog is fine by me
x
Yeah, that was a pain in the arse. For me personally, Singing Loins were the other act I most wanted to see that day. And from an audience point of view, it split the “Medway contingent” who might also possibly have wanted to see both.
i like the fact that there is a “medway delta” full of good soulful bands. the bands in canterbury seem content to lie in the middle of the road playing two grand acoustics and singing about nothing but half hearted mock surreal trash. to me the fight folk ideal as i see it is to tackle the absurdity (i think thats spelt right) of the world and the human condition by diving headlong into it and punching out from the inside. maybe thats just me but thats what i think of when i hear crook, the lions, billy childish etc. there is a lot to be said for dipping your toe in the gutter then dragging it out again.
