The Pros and Cons of Eating Out – details
We’ve mentioned bits in passing over the past couple of months, but now it’s time to formally announce that the third, long-awaited Lupen Crook album – The Pros and Cons of Eating Out – will be released on Monday October 4th 2010.
The album will be released on Beast Reality Records and will be available from both mainstream and indie UK music shops (via Shellshock distribution), online (mail order & download) and of course direct from the Crooked Family at gigs.
The CD version of the album will be released in a digipack based on some characteristically uncompromising artwork. As Mr Crook mentioned the other day, the original printers refused to handle it and we had to seek a last-minute alternative.
We won’t spoil the surprise for now. The digipack will be enclosed in a slipcase featuring the “puzzled heart” design above. There will also be a poster in the digipack containing artwork on one side and full lyrics for all songs on the other.
The track listing is as follows:
- Fantasist In March
- Will O The Wisp
- Sleeping Lions
- Dorothy Deserves
- World’s End
- Devil’s Son
- Lest We Connect The Crooked Family
- Scissor Kick
- Pirate’s Wife
- How To Murder Birds
- Hour Glass
- Ode To Fucking Everyone
Mr Crook has already mentioned the work he’s been doing on the limited edition box set version of the album. There will only be twenty of these. More to follow on this over the next week so, including fuller details of exactly what it contains.
We’ll be keeping you updated on a regular basis. Next step is to make the album available to you on pre-order. Keep those eyes peeled… x

Excellent! Getting very excited now! Just need to try and make sure I get my mits on one of those 20 boxes! Looking forward to hearing How To Murder Birds, it sounded aces at Latitude.
Dan x
reserve my l. e. b. now…. you know you need coverage in the north east ;o)
I want to reserve a box set as well!! Can’t wait to see what it contains
Love that artwork, love the tracklisting.
Can’t wait!
Can I reserve a boxset or something?
x
P.S, I’m getting start properly on the bass tomorrow.
Still really glad that you guys ship overseas haha. So excited for this album! I’m also very intrigued about this boxset! Can’t wait! xx
if reserving limited edition boxes is cool is it alright to reserve one for myself at all? can’t wait to hear the new Lp
x
20?! bloody hell… add me for reservation too, if that’s the way it’s working (which just seems too easy).
so excited for this though, box set or no box set
I want a boxset. PLEASE put me down for 1!
Well if everyone else is reserving box sets, I think I should try, too
Although I expect it will all actually come down to fast fingers and plump paypal accounts.
fast fingers seems fair
x
I’m intrigued as to what this refused artwork looks like.
The album title and mention of banned artwork conjures up allsorts in my head!
Mr Crook if Lizzie doesn’t get her l.e.b. she’s going to get VERY ANGRY xxx
I’m sure, as Hg says, it won’t be this easy but if there is to be a list can you please add dAn for a limited edition boxset thingy.
(we’ll all shit a brick when you say it’s £45!!)
BRING IT ON!
dAn. x
Have to try. Another boxset reserved!
xxx
If people are reserving a box set then I would like to as well.
seems like those l.e.b’s are in high demand! (which obviously they would be
) don’t know if this is how you’re doing it but if so i would love to reserve a boxset too!
nice to see the tracklist, didn’t know “scissor kick” was on there, i was going to comment on the lyrics section of that song lastnight (the ace rickety rackety drums and the rowdy lyrics/delivery, gotta love it so)..all the best with the rest of the preparation!
peace&strums x
I know I didn’t use the word ‘reserve’ in my post up there. But if there is some list, could you guys pop my name on it? Glad to see such an excited fluster among everyone!
x
hmmm yep if reserving is the way to go then i’d like to do that too
Long time no see you crooked fuckers! I would love to be added to that reservation list, without any reservations at all.
Hope all is well x
hello, i’d also like to be added on the reservation list if there is one. doesn’t seem so though.
x
Hi everyone. Wow, what a massively heartening response. Great to see all the website regulars showing their support and also plenty of names we’ve not come across here before.
Obviously we want to ensure that everyone who’s interested in one of these box sets has a chance to buy one. At the same time, the way you’ll be able to “reserve” your box is to pre-order and we’re not quite ready to accept pre-orders for these just yet. I have to ask for your patience. Obviously we appreciate everyone’s keenness.
You might wonder why we can’t just take the list above as an informal pre-orders list. Thing is, we’ve also got people commenting on Facebook and contacting us via e-mail & MySpace, so keeping track of it could get very complicated.
One thing is clear. There are probably already more than twenty people interested. We’re considering what we’re able to do about this. Ideally we’d simply make more, but as you’ve seen from Mr Crook’s blog posts on the subject they’re quite labour-intensive. No promises at this stage, but let us have a think.
I did mention that they’re £500 each, yeah? The gold-plating is the final stage. (Just kidding!)
One thing I would say… if you’re definitely interested, please keep leaving comments saying you’re interested, even though they won’t count as a “reservation”. Getting an accurate idea of demand will help us to decide how to proceed.
We really do appreciate everyone’s interest and support. We’re as excited as you about this album finally being released. x
I will be buying a box set if I get the opportunity so count me in your stats please X
Still interested!:-P
Actually, that depends…
are the additional trinkets things like pubes and nail clippings or things like sketches and 20 track EP’s?
(Still interested)
dAn. x
dAn – great. I’m off to buy a gold bar and a personal grooming kit
Seriously, the additional trinkets are the things we have to finalise, then determine cost and set the price. Work very much in progress and high on the agenda. x
i can’t say i’ve ever seen half of these names before. maybe i’m just a tad slow on the uptake. nice to see crooked fans coming out of the woodwork. summer’s festivals well spent by the looks of it
x
p.s. i think 20 or so people on here wanna boxset by my count
ok maybe 20 was too much…10 to 15 probably
x
Love the sleeve! Surely that album cover is destined to become a t-shirt design too?
TOM! If you’re lingering around in the background there… that heart would look cool in a tattoo design, no?
4 hours booked for November the 10th! You ARE the man!!
Hg- you meant you DON’T personally groom already??!
peace out lads,
dAn. x
No, I mean there’s no way I’m lending mine to the band
Box set go! (Target reference from the late 80′s there, look it up kids, its a corker!) Urko x
keep leaving comments? how often? i can do this every day if you want me to
Urko – wow, not heard that one for years.
rb – heh… I meant that people who hadn’t yet left a comment should note their interest. Repeat comments won’t influence anything! But we’d never put people off commenting… what’s going on in your world today?
in response to hg’s last statement I’ve just got to work and ordered a stylophone beatbox from play.com. it can make kinda late 70′s early 80′s post punky drum beat sounds which is always good. also wondering if least we connect on the new lp is a re recording and thinking about “there is a light that never goes out”. up the moz!
x
Joe – not re-recorded, but re-mastered.
I thought i’d commented, but it appears not… i’d like a box set
And just to confirm, and I think I speak for EVERYONE… we’d all like a special boxset thing as long as you dinnae stick pubes and saliva and stuff in it cos- let’s be honest, even Hg ain’t down with that shit!
If my finger ain’t fastest, which I expect it winnae be then I will get the next fing on offer which will still bash out the same crude choons so my eyes will be dry and shining either way. (unless there IS 20 track EP with it..)
You are making weather and light changes more bearable and welcoming- KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Roll on Autumn!
dAn. x
Hg – thanks for clearing that up. but just to re-iterate anyway, i am still up for some boxset joy!
what’s going on in my world? spent the afternoon planning domination of the USA via Amtrack, Greyhound, hostels and rucksacks. always planning an escape route out of here. good times. how about you sir?
dAn – all I can say is that your fevered imagination might be shaping the contents of this box set in ways that you hadn’t quite anticipated
rb – a deliciously dull Sunday, following a typically manic week and a mostly lost Saturday. Ready to start again tomorrow…
Exciting response!! Let’s not forget I was third in the queue and am not above resorting to a bit of bribery
So happy to see a real buzz for the album – about time too!!
A brief under-the-radar update to keep you all in the Crooked loop…
We’ve been hatching plots and plans, taking your feedback and working out what we can do.
Making more box sets at this stage is, I’m afraid, simply impractical. Twenty it is. Not that this decision is set in stone forever, but that’s the way it has to be right now.
Timescales are being determined and will be finalised on Monday. All going well, we’ll give you a day or two’s notice of the time at which we’ll be accepting pre-orders.
Then, as Daquifsta put it above, it’ll have to be a case of fastest fingers first… the fairest way we can deal with this. Natural selection, innit… survival of the phattest.
The way that your feedback has influenced our plans is that there will also now be another special edition of the album, sitting “inbetween” the regular (still beautiful) CD and the box set. This one won’t be limited and there will be as many copies as demand requires.
This is all rather spur-of-the-moment and we’re still working out the finer details, but we’re determined to rise to the challenge. Can’t say much more at present, other than watch this webspace. x
Good review of the album:

Looking forward to getting myself a copy.
Yeah, we’re pleased with that one. Guess I can stop being so coy about that artwork now it’s (partially) visible online! Needless to say, nothing beats the impact of the poster version that comes with the CD.
Cheers Ollie. Hope your well mate. Still need to get me hands on your album. I’m in da Medway towns this weekend possibly, fancy meeting for a pint? x
