Hard Times
Can you connect with the world outside, or do you spend too much time in your head?
Do you understand ‘War and Peace’ or would you rather just drink with your friends instead?
These are hard times, for good time’s sake
I can’t connect with the nine to five’s, they ain’t got no time for me
I can’t connect with the unemployed, though we all watch the same shit on TV
These are hard times, for those who call themselves free
I heard from the agency, they’re cracking down
It is fine for Fantasists, though they’re only allocating room for one in each town
These are hard times for good times sake
Can you connect with youth nowadays, or still finding yours in yourself?
Are you waiting for a tragedy to break you out of your shell?
These are hard times for those who couldn’t tell
A scholar to a skank
A tailored man to tramp
A lady to a lush
A good friend turned to rat
A scholar to a skank
A sultan to a sap
A road lined with ruin – foot down and head toward that
I spoke to my friend today, he’s living life on a bench
I’ve got to say I felt pleased for him, I haven’t seen a sunrise since I don’t know when
I can’t connect with my girl today she’s got some other in mind
Still I make like a modern house mouse with my neck trapped tight in a cold metal vice
These are damned days, I’ll be damned if ain’t right
I heard on the grapevine, tomorrow might be your last
I gotta say it come as no surprise, because Good times, Hard times, walking the line
Hard times or good times sake
